Caring for Carcinoid Foundation - Research RFP

Research RFP

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF) issues a Request for Proposal (RFP) prior to awarding research grants.

CFCF's RFP are open to all scientists who undertake cutting-edge, genetically-based carcinoid / NET research.

NIH Challenge Grant: The Biology of Carcinoid and Related Neuroendocrine Tumors

As part of the American Recovery and Investment Act of 2009 the NIH has designated at least 200 million for Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research. The Biology of carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumors has been selected as a specific Challenge Topic under the Broad Challenge Area of Translation Research.  Click here, to view this NIH announcement.

Biology of carcinoid cancers and related neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Carcinoids and NETs are a heterogeneous group of tumors located largely in the gastrointestinal system but also in other tissues including the pancreas and lung. Carcinoid tumors originate in hormone-producing cells and can produce an excess of a variety of hormones such as serotonin, bradykinin, histamine, and prostaglandins, resulting in a diverse set of symptoms called "carcinoid syndrome". However research in this area is highly understudied.  Areas of high research priorities include: Molecular insights for a better understanding of cellular and molecular biology of neuroendocrine cells and mechanisms of tumorigenesis; identification of molecular markers and improve imaging modalities for early diagnosis, novel markers for identification of high-risk patients and improve understanding of the natural history of this disease; validation of neuroendocrine tumor models and cell lines to prove molecular mechanism of tumor promotion and progression.

The Carcinoid Challenge Topic is 15-CA-118 on page 164 of the Broad Challenge Areas.  Click here, for more information about the Challenge Grants

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation and The AGA Foundation for Digestive Health and Nutrition (FDHN) proudly announce a new research award for young investigators.

Applications are now being accepted for the Mary Terese Hartzheim Award for Neuroendocrine Tumor Research, a new grant that provides $150,000 ($75,00 per year for two years) to young investigators researching biology of carcinoid or neuroendocrine tumors, and/or the development of novel therapeutic approaches to this group of diseases.

Funded by the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation (CFCF), the object of the award is to expand interest and expertise in the field of neuroendocrine tumor research at academic medical institutions.  Applicants must be within five years of completing their clinical or postdoctoral training, and must demonstrate a commitment to further research in this area.  This grant is being awarded in honor of Mary Terese Hartzheim with the generous support of the MTH Foundation.

For more information about this award, including complete eligibility criteria and a downloadable application, please visit the FDHN's Website at www.fdhn.org.

Apply today

This is the first time that the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation has partnered with the prestigious AGA and the MTH Foundation.  Through this partnership we look forward to increased awareness, increased scientific interest, and scientific discovery to bring about novel treatments and diagnostics for patients.
